Description: Here is a small piece of flag that was picked up on the battlefield of the Second Bull Run. The card reads, "Piece of an American Flag picked up on the Battlefield of the Second Bull Run Fight in October 1862 by Edward R. Hixson (Actually Hixon) Co. B. 33d Regiment Mass. V.M. on their way from Germantown to Thoroughfare Gap to intercept the Rebels. The Rebels coming through "Manassas Gap" with a large force. cut them off and caused a hasty retreat." According to the Historical Data system, Hixon was a 23 year old Dentist from Sharon, Massachusetts. He enlisted on 7/18/1862 as a Corporal and on 8/5/1862 he mustered into Company B of the 33rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He eventually transferred to the 133rd. Co. Veteran Reserve Corps 2nd Battalion on 3/15/1864 and mustered out of the Veteran Reserve Corps on 7/20/1865. He was later a member of GAR Post No. 94 in Canton, Massachusetts and died on 10/28/1888. Edward R. Hixon was one of 36 wounded on 7/2/1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg.
