Z5761 Pre-Civil War Greene Carbine Lock Plate, Massachusetts Arms Company
Description: Decent original lock plate for the Greene breech-loading carbine with the Maynard Tape priming mechanism. The lock is fully functioning in every aspect. The majority of these were part of a British contract. The guns weren’t used and sat in storage until they were destroyed or sold off for surplus. The lock plate is marked "MASS.ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS / U.S.A. 1856.” There is an additional marking of the English crown with VxR below. The Maynard Tape door is marked "MAYNARD’S PATENT / SEP.22,1845.” The back of the lock plate is marked with a Crown over A over 3. As stated before, some of these were destroyed and sold for surplus. This appears to be one of those pieces. The screw on the left-hand side of the face is broken off on the back. Fortunately, the lock plate remained straight. Nice example with plenty of original case coloring left.
