Z6353 Rickard Style Screw Key Lock Marked "MF”

Description: Decent 19th century screw key lock that is similar to the Rickard family locks of Shepherdstown, Virginia / West Virginia. This style of lock was originally manufactured by Michael Rickard. The family business was then carried on by his son Elijah Jackman Rickard, and then on to his son, James Rickard.

This lock is either a period copycat lock or it was personalized. It’s clearly stamped "MF” on the top portion. This piece is fully functional and comes with a key. In order to open the lock, you screw the key counterclockwise. In order to lock it, turn the key clockwise. The key has a brazed loop that is bent from torque.

Overall, this is a decent early screw key lock with a maker mark or personalized mark that I haven’t seen before. It’s fully functional, has a matching key and a dark patina with a little light rust and pitting. The Rickard family is well known for their B&O railroad switch locks. Elijah Rickard is well known for his manacles which were used on John Brown.
