Description: Very nice .54 Hunt and Jennings self-propelled "Rocket Ball” cartridge. These were patented by Walter Hunt of New York City on August 10, 1848, under US Patent No. 5,701. The powder is cased within the bullet and capped with a cork wafer with a perforated hole. These were used with the Jennings patented single loading and repeating rifles. This variant does not have the patent date on the side. It’s important to note that there are several different lengths of these with and without the patent information. A hard cartridge to find and the predecessor of the Volcanic self-contained cartridge!
