Z8288 Lawrence Primer Tube for Sharps Rifles & Carbines
Description: Here is a very nice example of the Lawrence primer tube charger for the Sharps rifles and carbines. This charger is made of a brass tube, a wooden dowel, and a wooden chuck or piston. The copper pellet primers were located on the opposite side of the wooden chuck.
These improved pellet primers were manufactured under Patent No. 9,820 dated June 28, 1853. These were used in conjunction with Patent No. 9,308, which was awarded on October 5, 1862, for a new method in priming firearms. The charger would be inserted into the mechanism and the wooden chuck or piston would be pushed down, loading 20+ into the feed system.
Once unloaded, the spent charger could be removed leaving the pellet primers in place. This example has over 20 pellet primers and still retains the wooden chuck or piston. There is a little oxidation on the brass tube.
I’ve noticed that there are three variants of these.
1.Brass tube with wooden dowel and chuck.
2.Brass tube with wooden dowel and no chuck.
3.Brass tube with wooden dowel and small nail.
