Z3977 Ornate One-Piece Civilian Early Hard White Pewter Coat button

Description: Nice ornate civilian style button produced by Anson Matthews of Southington, Connecticut. Tice states that between 1806-1830, "Matthews was a prolific maker of hard, white, pewter buttons with iron shanks." This example has a very nice iron shank and the backmark is worn. The shank is present although ever so slightly bent. Tice also states that, "he was issued a patent in 1815 for an improvement in manufacturing buttons molds from wood."
