Z5027 Battle of Antietam, Maryland Monument, Centennial Token
Description: Nice centennial token commemorating the Maryland Monument located on the Antietam National Battlefield. The face of this token features the Maryland monument with trees in the background. The words below the monument read, "ERECTED IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN HEROES OF BOTH THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH." The outer edge of the face reads, "MARYLAND MONUMENT / ANTIETAM BATTLEFIELD." The reverse center of the token reads, "ALL'S QUIET ALONG THE ANTIETAM TONIGHT; NO SOUND SAVE THE RUSH OF WATER; WHILE SOFT SETS THE SUN ON THE GRAVES OF THE DEAD- THE HEROES OFF DUTY FOREVER." The outer edge of the reverse reads, "*100TH ANNIVERSARY MAY 30TH MEMORIAL DAY EXERCISES* / 1867-1967 / SHARPSBURG, MARYLAND." The token retains most of its original luster with some wear to the high spots. This is one variant of several Centennial Tokens minted for our local area.
