Z7348 Civil War or Indian War Mitten Remnant
Description: This is one of several items recovered from the Fort Pembina privies. Fort Pembina was located just west of the Red River and was built to watch over the Sioux and to ensure the safety of those living along the Red River. The fort was completed in 1870/71 and caught on fire in 1895. Some of the troops assisted in suppressing a Fenian Raid into Canada. The privies were full of items dating from the Civil War up through the Indian War era.

This is a small size mitten remnant. You can clearly see the separated thumb piece and the finger covering has rotted away. This could potentially be a Civil War Era mitten or perhaps an 1873 Pattern mitten. It is one of several recovered from the privies at Fort Pembina. This is an excavated example with damage but is an Indian War Era used item that isn’t often recovered in excavated condition!
