Z7867 Indian War M1873 Colt & M1875 S&W Ammunition Crate
Description: Here is a very nice Indian War era ammunition crate. This crate originally held packets of .45 ammunition used in both the Model 1873 Colt "Peacemaker” SSA and the 1875 Smith & Wesson Schofield. These cartridges were manufactured at the Frankford Arsenal between the mid-1870’s and early 1880’s. Ammunition crates are scarce because most of them were used as firewood as soon as they were empty. Luckily, this example was purchased by Francis Bannerman as surplus and was then used to ship merchandise to West Hartford, Connecticut. The paint is original with your typical scuffs, dents, chips, etc. The lid is a replacement and still retains the original Bannerman label. A hard-to-find accessory for any Indian War Colt or S&W Schofield display! Both ends are clearly marked:
REVOLVER
BALL
CARTRIDGES
CAL. 45
The sides are marked:
REVOLER BALL
CAL. 45
Frankford Arsenal
One side is stamped "MANUF’D. OCT. 25 1878.”
Measures: 15” x 9.5” x 6.5”
