Z8344 Excavated Marsden & Burrell Candlestick Holder
Description: Here is a very nice, excavated traveling candlestick holder. On November 26, 1861, both S.L. Marsden & S.R. Burrell were awarded US Patent No. 33,788 for an improvement in candlesticks.
According to the patent document, "This invention consists in having a metal socket of sufficient dimensions to hold a candle, provided with a spike or a screw, or both combined, and arranged, as hereinafter described, so that the sockets may readily be secured to any woodwork such, for instance, as the center-pole of a tent, the frame of a window, or any frames arranged specifically for them. I have yet to see one with a threaded end, but I’ve seen plenty of dug examples recovered in camps with the standard spike.
This example is excellent condition and is out of the Richard "Dick” Hammond collection. It’s an early find with very little oxidation on the surface. If you look closely, you can partially see the top rim is marked, "PATd NOV / 1861.” An excellent dug example with a slightly bent spike.
Measures: H 2.09” D 1.339”
