Z7904 U.S. Model 1917 Mess Kit/Meat Can
Description: Nice example of a substitute contract production meat can used in the training camps prior to WWI. Some of these were locally manufactured while some were manufactured under larger contracts. Some collectors refer to this style as a Model 1890 Meat Can. There are a few different types of these proving they were manufactured by several firms.
This example has a tinned, two-piece stamped sheet iron body. The swiveling handle is stamped "US” near the tip. The top has a small opening ring that is attached to the plate by a single rivet. There are a few rust spots here and there with the majority of the rust along the exposed outer edge. The inside still retains quite a bit of the original tin finish. A very variant of a U.S. meat can or mess kit.
